Key teaching phrases 

  • “Imagine your buttock muscles are elevating your leg not your lower back muscles” 
  • ‘Imagine your belly button being pulled towards your spine” If you want the patient to use transversus abdominis during this exercise 
  • “Don’t let your head drop – keep your eyes on the floor” 
  • “Lengthen the back of your neck” 
  • “Remember to breathe” 
  • “Keep your elbows directly beneath your shoulders” 
  • “Don’t bend your knees” 

Contraindications 

  • Inability to hold the plank position due to weakness/lack of endurance 
  • Elbow, shoulder, ankle, toe or lower back pain during or after this exercise 
  • Repeated foot cramping during this exercise
