Key teaching phrases

  • “Avoid hunching your shoulders to perform the movement”
  • “Maintain a natural curve in your lower back”
  • “Avoid poking your chin forward – keep your head over your body.”

Contraindications

  • Early recovery phase of post rotator cuff surgery (12)
  • Recent shoulder dislocation/subluxation
  • Shoulder pain during or after the exercise (except those using the pain-monitoring model)
  • Pectoralis major or deltoid muscle strain
  • Bench presser’s shoulder or a recent increase in the use of bench press, swimming or push-ups

*Caution should apply to patients already performing exercises that recruit the pectoralis muscles especially with high loads or poor technique. Addition of the upward punch may contribute to overuse and in turn tendonopathies. We suggest prescribing a scapulafocused exercise regime and reduction in loads in these particular patients (refer to beginner exercises for the scapula).
