What to say to patients
“When you have tennis elbow it is important that we place strain on the tendon through exercise. This can be a confusing idea because wasn’t it strain that caused the problem in the first place! When you injure yourself the force you put on the tendon was more and often faster than what it could handle. Now we have the opportunity to slowly and correctly strengthen the tendon in a controlled manner which changes its structure so that it can tolerate more in the future.”
“This exercise can lead to reductions in pain; however, it can take some time before appropriate gains in strength are achieved and you should persevere for at least two to three months. Increasing the weight as you improve over time is also essential.”
