Key teaching phrases 

  • “Don’t shrug your shoulders.” 
  • “Avoid slouching to perform the movement.” 

Contraindications 

  • Early recovery phase of post rotator cuff surgery19 
  • Recent shoulder dislocation/subluxation 
  • Shoulder pain during or after the exercise 
  • Bench presser’s shoulder or a recent increase in the use of bench press, swimming or push-ups.* 

*Caution should apply to patients already performing exercises that recruit the pectoralis muscles especially with high loads or poor technique.52 Addition of standing inward rotation may contribute to overuse and in turn tendonopathies. You may wish to skip this exercise if you believe this may be a risk for your patient.
