Learning aims

At the completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Recall relevant circumstances that the Otago exercise programme is particularly effective for

  • Recall the circumstances under which a patient should cease home exercise and consult their health care practitioner immediately

  • Have the knowledge to prescribe the appropriate number and type of exercises with appropriate follow up and progressions to patients who would benefit from the Otago exercise programme

  • Recall the benefits of the Otago exercise programme

  • Recognise falls and hip fracture risk factors

  • Recognise the potential impact of lower extremity, hip abductor and ankle function as well as balance on the risk of falls

  • Recognise the impact of knee flexor versus knee extensor function on the risk of falls

  • Note limitations of calf circumference assessment

  • Consolidate understanding of various types of walking and its effect on falls risk

  • Consolidate understanding of mechanisms associated with falling such as co-contraction and fear of falling

  • Recall stair structure and environment that could increase the risk of a fall and the consequence of stair falls

  • Recall the procedures for conducting three key assessments to monitor patient progress
