Learning aims

At the completion of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Recall the correct technique and teaching cues for performing beginner exercises for the hip

  • Recall which conditions can respond favourably to beginner exercises for the hip

  • Have the knowledge to prescribe the appropriate number of repetitions of exercises for optimal results

  • Recognise the effects of ageing and hip osteoarthritis

  • Recognise the role of the deep hip external rotators

  • Recall the benefits of balance training gluteals

  • Recall relevant conditions/circumstances that would benefit from intermediate exercises for the gluteals

  • Recall the amount of time each exercise prescription should take and the different circumstances in which they can be prescribed

  • Recognise the outcomes a patient can expect following performance of each of the exercise prescriptions

  • Consolidate understanding of relevant anatomy and physiology to aid in the prescription of exercises for the gluteals

  • Recall the evidence-base for individual gluteals exercises

  • Recall instructions and corrections that can be used to deliver intermediate exercises for the gluteals

  • Recall explanations for the purpose, rationale and requirements of each exercise

  • Have the knowledge to modify an exercise and advice based on typical technique errors

  • Have the knowledge to choose appropriate gluteal exercises for individual patient circumstances

  • Recall which exercises result in the highest level of gluteus medius and maximus activity

  • Recall which step-up box exercises result in greater concentric or eccentric activation of gluteus medius
