Day 1:

11.00am – 11.30am       Morning Break

11.30am – 1.30pm       Differentiating lumbar spine presentations for exercise prescription (history and examination)

1.30pm – 2.00pm         Lunch

2.00pm – 3.30pm          Chronic pain a summary of the neurology

3.30pm – 4.00pm         Afternoon break

4.00pm – 6.00pm        Exercises (including Pilates) for chronic lumbar pain

Who is your presenter?

Dr Alice Evans

BHSc. M.Chiro. Cert IV Training and Assessment, Pilates Practitioner (DipPilates), Women’s Artistic Gymnastics Coach

Over the past 20 years, Alice has worked as a leader, clinician (chiropractor, Pilates instructor), and educator in the health promotion and e-learning space. She has been integral in developing over 45 hours of ESSA accredited courses through her company Evidence for Exercise and trained over 3000 practitioners world-wide by providing engaging online content. An early and passionate adopter of Pilates she established a multidisciplinary clinic in 2006 and has had over 80,000 consults. As a chiropractor she has a special interest in low back pain and is an annual international guest speaker at the Virtual Neurology Summit. A former national gymnastics champion and coach Alice has a lifelong passion for exercise.

Learning aims and objectives

Essential (but fascinating) anatomy and physiology to guide your approach

At the completion of this course participants should:
•Recall the structures in the spine that can generate pain under current evidence
•Understand the special role of the disc
•Recall the features of the nucleus pulposis that creates strength and flexibility of the spine
•Recall the features of the annulus fibrosis that contribute to its function
•Recall the features of the annulus fibrosis that make it vulnerable to certain types of loading movements
•Recognise changes in the intervertebral disc that cause degenerative or painful discs
•Recall a recent study demonstrating better disc composition and hypertrophy with chronic running in age group 25-35
•Understand the role of facet joints, sacroiliac joints, vertebral endplates, ligaments and muscles in generating pain

Differentiating lumbar spine conditions (quick and easy in clinic system)

At the completion of this course participants should:
•Understand that patients with discogenic pain or facet joint sprains will be aggravated with certain movements
•Be able to perform a battery of tests that can help you identify which movements or types of exercise are more likely to aggravate your patients with low back pain
•Recognise that developing and practising a routine for patient history and examination will improve patient outcomes

Acute lumbar disc (exercises to relieve pain)

At the completion of this course participants should:
•Be able to prescribe several exercises that provide relief for patients with acute lumbar disc pain

Chronic pain: a summary of the neurology

At the completion of this course participants should:
•Understand that chronic pain is fundamentally different from acute pain
•Recognise that biological factors could still be playing a part in the chronic pain process
•Understand the psychosocial factors associated with chronic pain
•Recall the current theories of chronic pain science

Exercises for chronic lumbar pain

At the completion of this course participants should:
• Be able to prescribe exercises based on the biopsychosocial nature of chronic pain
